A Nasty Virus

How Do I Ward Off Computer Viruses?

  1. Use virus protection software and update your virus definitions frequently. The most basic step to keeping viruses away from your computers is to install and keep up-to-date an antivirus program. Set it up to scan your system every time your turn on your computer, and to scan every file you try to download.  Since new viruses seem to appear every day, be sure to keep your antivirus program updated by downloading new virus definition updates regularly. Some virus programs have "update" features that do this for you automatically. Visit the Web site of your virus software manufacturer for guidance if you are unclear on how to update your software.

  2.  Don't open unknown e-mails. Never launch any e-mail attachment unless you know what it is. Even attachments in e-mails from friends or colleagues can contain viruses, due to the ability of a virus to replicate someone's entire e-mail list to spread itself. If you must open these files, scan them first with antivirus software.

  3. Exercise caution in downloading files. If you download files from the Internet, be certain that the source is a legitimate and reputable one. Verify that an antivirus program checks the files on the download site. If you're unsure, don't download the file at all or download the file to a floppy and test it with your own antivirus software.
  4.  Don't allow all employees to load their own software. An unskilled person may inadvertently damage software while loading it onto their computer, thereby creating or increasing the likelihood of a virus. The money invested in having a professional load your business software will pay off in smoother office operations.
  5. Watch out for hoaxes. While all virus alerts should be treated seriously, a growing number of messages circulating the Internet involve hoax viruses that don't actually exist. These hoaxes spread by e-mail, and can be a nuisance to companies that have real security concerns. So, before forwarding warnings to your entire mail list, check the veracity of a particular virus alert to avoid causing any unnecessary panic. You can do this via one of the many Web sites that track both legitimate viruses and hoaxes.
